Twenty years ago my husband Phil and I went on our first mission trip to a small city in the far south of Brazil - Canoas. We were part of a team that helped the local church build a portion of their church building. Over the years we have kept in touch with the boys we had worked with who are now men. They are husbands, fathers, pastors. This spring, the state that Canoas is in, Rio Grande do Sul, was hit by devastating floods, and the church we had helped build was underwater. The Pastors, Felipe, and Fernando, have worked tirelessly in their community to rescue stranded neighbors and organize aid efforts. I now have an opportunity to join with my friend, Pastor Alan Santos, and a group from his church in Campinas, Brazil, to go back to Canoas and help with rebuilding what the floods destroyed. I am also bringing supplies for a sports outreach for the women of Pastor Alan's church, Casa do Evangelho. The funds raised will provide those supplies as well as my travel costs.
