Dear friends, cancer continues to ask far too much of Kate, and lately the road has become significantly more rocky. Alongside the complications she’s been navigating from the clinical trial she has been on, the trial itself ultimately proved not to be effective. So her medical team is now moving her to a different treatment regimen. She is back on chemo and is responding to that well.
During a recent and lengthy hospital stay, it was discovered that Kate had a bleed on her brain. Less than two weeks ago she had emergency brain surgery to relieve the pressure it had caused and thankfully it was successful. She recovered from that surgery astonishingly fast and is so happy to be back at home. The surgery and lab work that followed uncovered that there is now metastatic cancer in the lining of her brain, and as a result Kate and Grant are working with yet another medical team, oncological radiologists to determine next steps.
So this is simply where we are now: every day is a new page or sometimes a whole new chapter. Kate is beginning to need a more time intensive regimen of care – in terms of health care and care at home.
While this isn’t the update we were hoping for, Kate and Grant are continuing forward with hope, gratitude, and the laughter and dark humor we all love – to survive the endless appointments, medical terminology and chronic uncertainty.
Kate and Grant have so much gratitude for the people who keep showing up. For the messages that arrive at exactly the right moment. For the meals, the check-ins, the rides, the patience, the laughter, the space to be exhausted, and the reminders that they are not carrying this alone.
For those who have asked how to support Kate in a tangible way, here is a way: financial contributions toward her ongoing care and treatment would help create stability and breathing room during an incredibly demanding chapter. Any help you are able to offer will be greatly and deeply appreciated.
Every act of generosity — large or small — truly matters.
With deep appreciation. — Team Kate + Grant
