Hi. My name is Kaitlyn. I am 24 years old in Starkville MS. This year has brought me to my knees, literally. My fiance and I moved here in mid January 2026, for a fresh start, and a relocation for a promised promotion. We were unable to drive 7 plus hours away just to apartment shop with a broken car and a short rushed time frame. So we found an apartment online, did video tours, you know how it goes. We pack up our lives and move a state over, and the place was falsely advertised. Half of the appliances and electrical fixtures didn't work, maintenence was nonexistent. The landlord even bullied us, calling us "angry tenant that continues to complain." Within not even a month of living in the ghetto, did a stranger that lived a few streets down try and break in and threatened to shoot me on sight. And shattered my living room window, which was never fixed. The cops were unhelpful, mislabeling a felony as a misdemeanor when I demanded charges be pressed. We stayed there for 2 more months, refusing to pay rent under the circumstances we were falsely advertised and nothing was done on either police or landlords end about the situation. They refused to give us our refund after everything we've been through. We still owe about $1500 to this realtor that we haven't even begin to be able to afford. I spent everyday from February 6 to April 12, living in the car while my fiance worked because of how much trauma I endured the night of the attack. 10+ hours a day, 5 days a week by myself in a parking lot because I was too scared to exist in my own apartment anymore, because even after that man never came back, the neighbors harassed and robbed us a few times. Mid April we move to another street in the same city, a place I found off Facebook that a kind stranger offered to me and helped pay for us to move in. I still owe her $200 for her help. My fiances birthday was ruined because of what happened in February. It was 3 days before his 26th birthday. We were too traumatized to enjoy it. So we're in the new place. Things are finally starting to look up. We lost our car in late June, which ruined our 7 year anniversary. Couldn't afford it, no transportation. We dont have any friends out here in the middle of nowhere. We were fortunately able to afford an electric bike with the help of my sister in law. Things slow down again, things feel fine. On August 8 we got hit by a car that didnt have insurance while riding our bike. She was going straight in a right turn only and said she did it because we were in the way. I sustained severe road rash, a sprained ankle, concussion and a sprained wrist. My fiance sustained a concussion, has a broken shoulder in 3 spots and road rash and severe bruising. His job has been doing what they can do help us, but they forced him to take a leave of absence. They took away his pto and sick leave to make up for "missed shifts", leaving us unable to pay rent. We are unable to get back on this bike with his injuries and my trauma, but he will be forced to ride it to work in his condition, not fully healed yet, because he has to get a pass from the doctors that he is good enough to go to work even though he hasnt healed, because otherwise. We cant survive. My 25th birthday is August 25, and because we were ran over, we cant afford it. I am so depressed, this year, like I said, has literally brought us to our knees, and I've been trying to find something positive to focus on but it feels like this year is just getting worse. I would really like to just catch a break. I'm not asking for much, just some understanding and anything you could do to help get us back on our feet. Thank you.
