On June 4, 2026, we lost our family. Simon Casanova had been with my cousin Nekeisha since Hurricane Harvey in 2017. For almost 9 years, through Harvey and everything after, he was by her side.

Nekeisha has served 26 years as a Mental Health Coordinator, caring for others in our community. Yes, she is confined to a wheelchair. Every day when she came home from taking care of others, Simon was there waiting to greet her at the door. That was their routine since 2017.

On June 4, 2026, Simon was at Nekeisha's house. He was let out for just a minute to use the restroom. While he was out, he was hit by a driver who ran a stop sign.

I don't live with them. At that time, I was focusing on my health and was on my way to help pick Simon up to get him emergency care.

While no one was home and while I was on my way, Simon was taken from her property after a family member called a contact they knew in animal control. Nekeisha was not shown a warrant and was not given a proper chance to bring him home. Before we could get him help, we were told Simon had been put down while in custody.

The photos show who Simon was - an indoor, loved house dog in his pajamas, at home with Nekeisha since Hurricane Harvey.

Now, Nekeisha has been charged with Cruelty to an Animal in connection with this accident.

She was trying to help her companion of almost 9 years, who was hit by a car at her own home - not harm him.

As a Mental Health Coordinator, this charge threatens her 26-year career she's built.

We have a lawyer who quoted $6,300 total:
- Retainer to fight the cruelty charge
- Filing for Expungement / Order of Nondisclosure if dismissed, so she can keep her job after 26 years
