  • Welcoming Luther Home

Luther is scheduled, and we are hopeful it remains, to return home Tuesday, November 18.
We want to ensure he has enough time to adjust once returning before visiting begins. Mary-Jane and I are working on determining the best way to help him manage. Details will be coming soon!
In the meantime, if you would like to sign the large "welcome home luther" banner that will be displayed on his front porch, please let us know! We'd be happy to coordinate a time in the morning, or even sign your name for you! We want him to know how loved he is by this community!

About this fundraiser

Our dear friend and neighbor Luther has always been the first to show up when someone needed a hand. Whether it was fixing something, offering a ride, checking in on someone who was struggling, or simply showing kindness, Luther has spent years quietly caring for the people around him. He never asks for help for himself — in fact, he’s the kind of person who would give his last bit of energy to help someone else. Now, it’s our turn to lift him up.

At the beginning of October, Luther suffered a brain bleed and spent several days at RMH. After returning home, he seemed to be recovering well. But in the third week of October, he suffered a stroke while sitting on his front porch. He fell from his chair and called out for our neighbor Mary Jane, who immediately called the rescue squad. Luther was taken to RMH, stabilized, and then airlifted to UVA, where he remained for about a week.

From there, he was transferred to Augusta Health for rehabilitation, where he has been working incredibly hard for the past two weeks to regain strength, mobility, and independence.

Luther will be coming home this Tuesday, and while this is a hopeful step, it will also bring new challenges. His medical bills will be significant — his insurance alone requires a $5,000 out-of-pocket minimum — and he will have additional expenses related to his care and daily needs once he’s home. He will not be able to return to work right away, and with winter approaching, we want to make sure he stays warm, safe, and supported at home.

Every donation — no matter the size — will go directly toward helping Luther with his medical costs, transportation, home needs, and basic living expenses during this difficult time. And if you’re not in a position to give, your prayers, encouragement, and messages of support mean just as much.

Thank you for helping us surround Luther with the same love and generosity he has always shown to others. ❤️
