For over 50 years, the 22,000-acre reservoir east of Dallas has been named after Ray Hubbard, a city official who famously vowed to 'hold segregation as long as we can.' This lake was created by flooding the fertile 'Bottoms'—a thriving Black community and freedom colony. In the process, homes were destroyed and ancestral burial grounds, including the historic Glen Hill Cemetery, were paved over or submerged. We are petitioning the Dallas City Council and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to rename this body of water Liberty Grove Lake. This name honors the original pioneers, the Black veterans of WWI and WWII, and the families like the Motons and Todds who built their lives on this land long before the dam. It is time to stop honoring a legacy of exclusion and start honoring the 'Liberty' these families fought for. Join us in restoring the map.
