  • Mad Mama

Mama was funny, stubborn, and deeply herself. She had a sharp wit, strong opinions, presence that filled a room, and cooking to make anywhere home.

Imagine watching that incredible human being slowly slip away, piece by piece, as dementia takes memories, independence, and familiarity with it. But now, sweet Mama is at rest.

This is hard to share, but I’ve created a fundraiser to help give Mama the beautiful funeral she deserves. What follows is a nightmare no one is ever prepared to navigate.

Mama was hospitalized after a fall. They told me she was a danger to herself and others, and wouldn't let me bring mom her wheelchair she used to go out. Then said I'd have to send her to Ohio, because no nursing home in the entire state of Kentucky would take her.

I knew being far from family and friends would not only break her spirit, it would kill her, and could not send mama away. Though she wasn’t injured, her condition declined rapidly. I was told it was simply dementia.

Later, I learned more was happening. By the time I realized she'd been placed on a chemical restraint and kept confined to bed, the damage was done. Mama never walked again, lost the ability to move a leg, and eventually could no longer sit up on her own.

After they made it so mama needed a hospital bed, Hoyer lift, and new wheelchair, they discharged her without any of that in place. So I took mom to another hospital, and got her off the chemical restraint, but they tried to send mama to Ohio too.

While racing against the clock to protect her dignity, I started a fundraiser to get mom the medical equipment and care she needed to go home. I made this video for it, but found an ADA apartment just in time, and became Mama’s primary caregiver.

Though I loved mama fiercely, it took everything I had, so I didn't get a chance to show the film. I chose a B-movie horror style because it was the only way I could process a reality that felt so unbearable. I’m sharing it now because it tells part of her story, and mine.

Mama deserved care, comfort, and love. Please help me give her a goodbye that honors who she was. If you’re able, please donate, even a dollar helps. If not, sharing means just as much.

About this fundraiser

Hello friends,

It’s been a while. As you may or may not know, I have been the primary caregiver of my mom in Kentucky for a very long time now.

Mama passed away the day before Thanksgiving, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and physical disability.

I find myself in a tough situation as my family does not have the funds for proper funeral arrangements.

Please help in whatever way you can, so I can give her the beautiful send off that she deserves.

     Yours gratefully,

Natacha
