Long Island residents, Brian Crowe and Leilani Garcia, invite you to support their Mission to Montauk, a self curated event to promote colon cancer prevention and awareness. How can you support? We encourage you to help save lives by sharing this page with loved ones, friends, work colleagues and your community. Knowledge and awareness is power and saves lives.

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, is a serious and possible life-threatening disease affecting the colon and rectum which are part of the large intestines. Colorectal cancer is the SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF CANCER DEATHS in both men and women in the United States. Colorectal cancer CAN BE prevented. We invite you to learn more about what we can do to save lives.

OUR MISSION

The 80-mile “Mission to Montauk” hike raises awareness about colorectal cancer by providing the community with valuable resources on prevention through screenings, lifestyle choices, and early detection. Our goal is to spark conversations and encourage action toward colorectal cancer prevention and early detection.

“Mission to Montauk” also strives to break the stigma surrounding the disease, fostering open discussions to reduce fear, embarrassment, and misconceptions.

We are using the 80-mile hike to share the importance of embracing nature for healing. Nature restores balance in our body by reducing stress, boosting immunity, enhancing mental clarity and promoting overall mental and physical well being; helping us heal from life’s challenges.

COLON CANCER DETECTION & PREVENTION INFORMATION*

Regular Screenings

According to some studies, colonoscopy is the most effective way to detect colorectal cancer early, when it is most treatable. The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk begin regular screenings at age 45.

Lifestyle Changes

Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet low in processed foods, exercising regularly and adding daily exercises to develop and maintain spiritual health can help reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Family History

People with a family history of colorectal cancer may need to start screenings at an earlier age.

Possible Symptoms

● Changes in bowel habits (e.g., constipation, diarrhea, or blood in the stool)

● Abdominal pain or bloating

● Unexplained weight loss

● Fatigue

Some Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies to name a few. Incorporating spiritual practices in your life may improve your healing and help with prevention.
