I am the brother and sole living family member of the Navy Veteran in the picture. I never thought we would be in this position, but here I am trying to ask strangers to help. The man you see dozing in the hospital bed has had a stroke and his recovery, like any stroke victim, is unknown.
When he retired, he made the decision to move in and take care of our parents. He made sure they were safe until they passed away. My life led me away from the area to find work and a family of my own. When he had the stroke, I drove through the night to get to his side when the hospital opened the doors. In the days that followed, I discovered some disturbing financial problems. I managed to take some of my retirement and pay off a mortgage on the house. But after talking to his bank, I found out he had been scammed out of a LOT of cash by some overseas crooks. That debt now has him well underwater in debt that he will never pay off.
He has survived cancer and it stays in remission, lives with type 2 diabetes as best he can, and now has limited physical strength and dexterity.
We are a proud couple of old men, but this is crushing us. He is home and managing, but the debt has been compounded by the medical expenses and modifications I had to make to the house. So hat in hand, I am asking for help for this veteran, my brother, to help lift some of his burden . Thank you.
