Stop Senior Homelessness

The sudden loss of a close friend who I lived with has forced me to have to move. Without notice the house was sold and I have 30 days to find a new residence and move. I don’t have the funds to move. I have been looking for a place but limited on doing anything until I can afford a place and have the money to move.

She was a friend of 10 years and asked me to move in and be her caregiver, of which I had experience doing. I accepted and have lived there for over 7 years.  She recently suffered life threatening medical issues and that warranted a call to 911 and she was transported to the E.R. Her biggest fear was going to the hospital and not returning. After running tests all day she was admitted for observation and assigned a room. Just before midnight  after receiving a sedative, her heart went into cardiac arrest. Although they worked to restart her heart an hour later after working on her for over an hour, my friend passed away. Her worst fear happened.

The house was in a trust and paid for so I continued to live there and paI’d the house bills as her family requested. I asked when I would need to leave and was assured that it was going to be a while longer but not to worry, just keep the utilities paid and they would keep me updated on the status. I had been organizing her belongings and clearing out the house, donating most items since her family didn’t want anything. They were adamant that they didn’t want to deal with the house. The house was covered under the trust, with my friend being the trustee.

Once the new trustee was established, apparently the decision was made to sell the house. Recently, without warning,  I was told the house was sold and I would need to vacate. I’m now forced to find a place to live and move within 30 days. I’m on Social Security and very frugal so I don’t spend frivolously. At 67, yes old I don’t need much except for affordable housing.  The waiting lists for affordable housing whether families or seniors is more than people realize. I don’t want to end up on the street or in a shelter.  In our current political climate we don’t know what’s going to happen. i am hoping to raise funds for myself that would allow me to move to a safe place with my belongings and make new memories with my grandchildren. I want to spend time teaching them about their family history and teach them traditiions so they can someday do the same.
