About this fundraiser

Thomas Williams passed away after a one-year stay in a memory care assisted living facility following numerous health issues over a multi-year period. During that time, we noted a recurring theme: delirium was a precursor to an identified health concern

Although my Dad suffered from delirium induced by hospital environment, metabolic imbalance, acute metabolic encephalopathy, and post-stroke ICU stay, the delirium he suffered during infections (UTI, Covid, pneumonia) were the worst because infections were easier for him to catch and often difficult to treat. I am hoping that donations to this type of medical research can help others in similar situations as my dad’s and mine.

Delirium is a serious change in mental abilities. It results in confused thinking and a lack of awareness of someone's surroundings. The disorder usually comes on fast — within hours or a few days. Delirium can often be traced to one or more factors. Factors may include a severe or long illness or an imbalance in the body, such as low sodium. The disorder also may be caused by certain medicines, infection, or surgery. (Mayo Clinic)

With Dad, the appropriate amount of liquid, electrolytes, and food also had a direct correlation with delirium. We wished we knew more about it (and still do despite what we have learned) and further research will hopefully get us there.
