My name is Megan Ashe, and I am asking for help after a catastrophic accident that changed my life in an instant.
For nearly 18 years, I dedicated my career to caring for others. As a Direct Support Professional and behavioral health worker, I spent my life supporting people with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders. After overcoming addiction myself, I worked hard to rebuild my life and was proud to help others do the same.
On my way home from work after finishing my shift at High Point Treatment Center in Plymouth, Massachusetts, I was involved in a devastating e-bike accident on State Road. Because I suffered a traumatic brain injury, I have no memory of the crash itself.
I was airlifted by medical helicopter to a Boston trauma center with multiple facial fractures, skull fractures, a traumatic brain injury, and other serious injuries. Since the accident, I have continued to struggle with memory and cognitive issues while working through a long recovery.
This accident has affected every part of my life.
I have been unable to work and lost my income. Because I had only recently started my job, I had been employed for less than 90 days and had not yet earned paid sick time or many employment benefits. My application for Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) was denied, leaving me without the financial support I had hoped would help me through my recovery.
One of the most devastating injuries has been the damage to my teeth and mouth. I am facing extensive reconstructive dental treatment, which may include dentures or dental implants, in addition to the other medical care I continue to need.
I also lost my primary form of transportation. I do not drive, and my e-bike wasn’t just a bicycle—it was my independence. It allowed me to get to work, attend medical appointments, and care for my family. Replacing it would give me back a measure of freedom as I continue to recover.
Beyond my own needs, I have children who depend on me and elderly parents whom I have always tried to help and support. Asking for help is incredibly difficult because I have always been the one caring for others, not the one needing care.
Every donation, no matter the amount, will help with expenses such as:
• Medical and dental treatment, including reconstructive dental care.
• Rent and utilities.
• Food and everyday living expenses while I am unable to work.
• Transportation and, if possible, replacing my e-bike so I can regain my independence.
• Ongoing recovery and rehabilitation costs.
If you are unable to donate, sharing my story with others would mean just as much. Every share increases the chance that someone who can help will see it.
I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I do know that I want to recover, return to helping others, and rebuild the life I worked so hard to create.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any support you are able to give. Your kindness and generosity mean more than words can express.
With gratitude,
Megan Ashe
