TORNADO & DERECHO STORM DAMAGE
Christy’s family faces urgent costs repairing derecho and tornado damage and replacing lost essentials

This summer has been incredibly hard on my family here in Griffith, Indiana. In just a matter of weeks, we were hit by multiple tornadoes and severe storms across Northwest Indiana. After an earlier tornado in June damaged our home, the most recent storms left us without power or Wi-Fi for 8 days and without cell service for 2 days. During that time, we lost all of the food in our refrigerator and freezer again, and because I work from home, I was unable to work during the extended outage. We were grateful to borrow a generator after two days, but the damage and stress have continued long after the storms passed.

Water flooded our basement, damaging carpet and furniture, and now the carpet is beginning to develop mold. We also need to have the affected walls treated properly so the mold does not spread and create an even bigger health risk. Our homeowners insurance will not cover the water damage caused by the natural disaster, so we are facing these costs on our own. This is especially urgent because my husband has severe asthma, and our infant granddaughter lives in our home. We are asking for help to replace the food we lost, remove the mold-damaged carpet, treat the walls, and begin restoring the damaged area of our home so it can be safe again for our family.
