Help Steven Afford the Legal Representation He Needs to Fight for His Children
My son Steven is going through one of the most difficult periods of his life, and our family is asking for help with something we never imagined we would have to ask for: the legal expenses necessary for him to protect his relationship with his children and meaningfully participate in his family-court case.
Steven spent years working toward becoming a physician. He completed medical school in 2020 carrying the financial obligations that come with medical education, and shortly afterward purchased a home and began trying to establish his career and family
The current litigation has been financially devastating.
For approximately three months, Steven was removed from his home while the case proceeded. His ability to work his normal PRN physician shifts was also affected. At the same time, the mortgage, household expenses, insurance, debt, and the ordinary costs of supporting a family did not stop.
When one person’s income is responsible for a significant portion of those obligations, even a temporary disruption in work can cause expenses to accumulate extraordinarily quickly.
That is what happened here.
Despite being a physician, Steven does not have unlimited financial resources. Years of education, student debt, prior legal expenses, the financial consequences of divorce, interrupted income, and the continuing costs of this case have depleted what he had available.
He is now facing a situation no parent should have to face:
He needs qualified legal representation to fight for his children and his parental rights, but he cannot presently afford the retainers required to obtain it.
Without assistance, he may have no choice but to represent himself against experienced legal counsel in a complicated family-court proceeding.
This fundraiser is not about attacking anyone. It is not about asking the public to decide the facts of a pending case.
It is about making sure Steven has a meaningful opportunity to be heard, to present his evidence properly, and to advocate for continued and meaningful involvement in his children’s lives.
Every contribution will be used toward his legal representation and the expenses directly associated with protecting his parental rights and his relationship with his children.
There is another reason this matters deeply to Steven.
Going through this process has shown him how difficult the family-court system can be to understand and navigate, particularly for parents who do not have the financial resources to retain experienced counsel.
Steven has told us repeatedly that when he gets through this, he intends to use what he has learned to help others.
He wants to advocate for fathers, parents, and families who find themselves overwhelmed by a system they do not understand and cannot afford to navigate. He wants to help connect people with resources, encourage accountability and due process, and make the road a little clearer for someone who comes after him.
No parent should lose the ability to meaningfully advocate for his or her children simply because the cost of litigation has exhausted everything they have.
Steven is not asking anyone to fight this battle for him. He is asking for the resources that will allow him to fight it properly.
If you are able to contribute, our family will be profoundly grateful. If you cannot donate, sharing this fundraiser may help it reach someone who can.
Our goal is simple:
Give Steven the opportunity to stand beside qualified counsel, present his case, protect his rights, and continue fighting to be the father his children know and love.
Thank you for reading his story, for sharing it, and for helping our family during an extraordinarily difficult time.
