My brother Brad is facing the fight of his life. He's battling late-stage cirrhosis and desperately needs a liver transplant. He's spent months in and out of hospitals, enduring failed knee surgeries, infections, and the relentless exhaustion of chronic pain and fatigue. The medical bills are mounting, and the looming cost of the transplant and aftercare is staggering. But Brad is so much more than his medical challenges. He's a man who embodies kindness, generosity, and an unwavering belief in the good in others.
He's a person who, without hesitation, and with me as a witness, buys meals for the homeless and gathers clothes and coats for them. I've seen him give away expensive new rafting tubes to kids who looked at them, starry-eyed with envy, playing with them first and then leaving them as a surprise gift. Once, he rescued a woman caught in a treacherous eddy in a roaring river, making sure she had my sister’s life vest so she could safely step on shore. He's volunteered at a nursing home, bringing joy to the residents with simple gestures like gifting our mom's Opium perfume to an elderly woman. He quietly paid for an elderly disabled woman's lawn care all year, even when he was struggling financially himself.
Brad has been a constant source of support for our family. He stepped in as a second father figure for my daughters, offering them wise words and deep empathy. And he's saved our dad's life – not once, but twice. When I was overwhelmed by a severe allergic reaction, he created a makeshift steam bath for my face and played guitar to soothe my panic. I’ve watched him listen with care to people who’ve had it easier than him as they’ve complained about their lives, all the while suffering more than any of us in facing possible death, extreme disability, and isolation due to illness, yet only shows empathy and entertains with humor and music.
Brad has always faced life's challenges with courage and conviction. He was unjustly fired from his government job – a situation so egregious that our attorney friend was horrified by the blatant illegality. Despite a valiant fight, we only won half the battle. Yet, Brad never let this injustice define him. He has been fiercely committed to sobriety for well over a year and a half, helping to counsel other people in the struggle, and having sat bedside with his friend who was lost to cirrhosis. He's a talented musician who can pick up any instrument and master it in a matter of weeks. He dreams of working with schools and opening a non-profit to give kids free music lessons and instruments (I’ve already created his business plan). The world needs him.
Where once he was the prettiest mogul skier I’ve ever seen, his body is shutting down–he can’t even walk–and he needs our help. Please donate whatever you can to help Brad get the life-saving transplant he needs and to rebuild his life. Your generosity will help cover his medical expenses that have accrued astronomically in recent years, the costs of temporary housing next to the hospital to be ready on a dime, post-transplant care, and living expenses while he recovers. Even if you can't donate, please share his story. Every act of support, big or small, makes a difference. The funds go straight into his account for medical expenses. Thank you sincerely!
