| I’m Isiah Brown, a 26-year-old hourly warehouse worker here in Jacksonville. Two nights ago, my family faced a sudden structural disaster. During a heavy downpour, the entire wooden overhang and porch ceiling structure of our house on Lambert St unexpectedly rotted through and collapsed, tearing down a section of our main front wall and blocking our only exit. When the structural inspector left this morning, the news was devastating: hidden termite degradation inside the older wood beams caused the collapse under the water weight. Because termites are classified as a 'gradual maintenance issue,' our standard housing insurance policy denied the claim entirely, refusing to pay a single cent for emergency debris removal or structural shoring. The contractor quote to clear the wreckage, install temporary support beams, and seal the exposed interior walls before toxic mold sets in is $4,500. As an hourly worker, I don't have this emergency cash sitting around, and the house is currently a major safety hazard for my family. I am swallowing my pride to ask for a hand up from my community. Every dollar or share of this link direct goes to the framing materials to make our home safe again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. |
