The things we often take for granted — like walking my son to the bus stop in the morning — have now become some of the biggest challenges of my life. As a single mom, it breaks my heart to not be able to show up for him the way I once did. But I believe in God’s strength and grace to carry me through this season. With faith and the kindness of others, I’m praying for the chance to heal fully and be there for my son to my fullest potential.
My name is Anastasya, and I am a single mother to a bright and spirited 7-year-old boy who means the world to me. Recently, our lives changed in an instant. I suffered a severe ankle injury that required a right ankle bimalleolar open reduction internal fixation surgery.
Like so many hardworking Americans, I thought skipping health insurance for a year would help me save money. I told myself if I stayed careful, nothing major would happen. But life doesn’t work that way — and now I’m facing a mountain of medical bills I could never have prepared for.
Since my surgery, even the simplest tasks — standing in the kitchen to cook, tidying our home, or walking my son to the bus stop — have become impossible. I can’t be on my feet for more than 10 minutes before the swelling and pain take over. I’ve had to put my car note on hold since I can’t drive right now, and I carry a deep concern about staying financially afloat during this recovery phase.
As a mother, all I want is to heal so I can return to being there for my son — to my fullest potential.
