Barrett is a smart, kind, funny, loving, and precious blessing! He has a huge heart and loves so big.
Why fit in when you were born to stand out? -Dr Seuss. Barrett is autistic ASD with a PDA profile which stands for "pervasive drive for autonomy" previously known as "pathological demand avoidance". His threshold for nervous system "fight or flight" activation is much more sensitive than that of a "neurotypical" person. He frequently experiences meltdowns and sensory overwhelm.
Nevertheless Barrett loves animals, interacting with animals helps calm him down more than anything else at times. Barrett’s service dog/best-friend is named Max! He’s a beautiful Saint Bernard who will be trained and ready to go home April 2025. Max will know several commands including deep pressure, crowd control, sensing emotional dysregulation, and also be trained to help reduce the risk of eloping, which is an issue for Barrett.
Initial costs for adopting a service dog can range between $20,000 and $30,000, with some dogs costing up to 50,000 dollars, depending on the type of skills they are trained to perform. This high upfront cost is due to the amount of training and specialized care that is put in to raising the service dog and teaching them to perform highly specialized tasks. Please consider contributing to Barrett’s journey towards a more independent life. Barrett’s goal of raising $5,000 in donations will help cover the final costs of training and placement.
