Support Austin P. Sharpes Liver Transplant Journey
Dear Friends, Family, and Kindhearted Supporters,
We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts and hopeful spirits to share Austin’s story. Austin has been diagnosed with stage 4 liver disease, at age 32, a hereditary condition that affects both sides of his immediate family. Over the past year, Austin has been in and out of the hospital 17 times due to complications from stage 4 liver disease. Despite these challenges, Austin remains determined to live and has been sober for seven months—a commitment he plans to maintain indefinitely.
Austin's family has suffered tragedies with the loss of his father, Patrick Sharpe ,to the same disease, his mother, Sandy Roberts Sharpe, facing ovarian cancer and chemo and has survived, the loss of his grandmother and his grandfather is very ill with late stage liver cancer that has spread.
Austin's Path to Recovery
Austin is officially on the waiting list at Tampa General Hospital with the Liver Transplant Program in Tampa, FL. His mother, Sandy, will be his caregiver following the transplant surgery. However, the road to recovery comes with significant financial burdens. Austin will need assistance with many things listed below: .
Rent and Food: While waiting for the transplant and then recovering near the hospital
Medication Costs: Including life-saving anti-rejection shots, insulin for his type 2 diabetes, and other essential medications.
Sandy, who works on commission, is struggling to make ends meet. She is unsure how she will cover her own bills alongside Austin’s needs. Despite these challenges, Sandy is determined to support Austin every step of the way.
Overcoming Unimaginable Hardships
In addition to his medical struggles, Austin has faced numerous hardships:
He lost his apartment in St. Pete due to back-to-back hurricanes that caused severe flooding and roof damage, rendering it unlivable and leaving him homeless.
He was in a car accident, which totaled his vehicle.
He has to live in Tampa, Fl to be ready for the call that may come to get a new liver and lease on life.
These setbacks have compounded an already difficult journey. Yet, Austin remains hopeful and resilient, bolstered by the love and support of his mother, sister, family friends, and community.
