I’m sharing this on behalf of one of the strongest and most loving mothers I know because right now she and her children truly need support.

My dear friend Kachelle is a single mother in Atlanta who has been fighting tirelessly to protect her children after years of emotional abuse and repeated aggression within the home. She has done everything the system asks protective mothers to do. She sought professional help. She documented concerns. She followed legal guidance. She has fought every single day to create safety, stability, and peace for her children.

And yet despite all of this, her children’s voices and experiences continue to go unheard.

Most heartbreaking of all, her youngest daughter is still being required to participate in unsupervised overnight visitation despite ongoing safety concerns and repeated efforts by Kachelle to advocate for greater protection and caution. As a mother, she is carrying the unbearable weight of feeling unable to fully protect her child while continuing to navigate a system that often fails to understand the reality of trauma and abuse.

What most people do not see is the enormous emotional and financial cost of trying to protect your children through family court. Kachelle has poured nearly everything she has into keeping her children safe and cared for. She has spent tens of thousands of dollars on attorneys, court expenses, childcare, evaluations, and maintaining stability for her children while enduring ongoing financial and legal abuse.

Most shocking of all, she alone has spent over $20,000 on the court appointed Guardian ad Litem, a process that was supposed to help protect and advocate for her children. Instead, despite enormous financial sacrifice, she continues to feel that her children’s voices and safety concerns are not being fully heard or prioritized.

One former attorney even placed a $20,000 lien on her home.

Kachelle is currently trying to retain a highly experienced trauma informed attorney with extensive experience representing protective mothers and children in complex abuse cases. Unfortunately, the cost of obtaining the level of legal protection her daughter deserves is overwhelming, especially after already spending so much simply trying to navigate this system. Right now, financial limitations are becoming a barrier to securing the advocacy and protection her children urgently need.

Still, every day, she continues showing up for her children with love, strength, gentleness, and courage. She continues fighting for a future where her children can simply feel safe, heard, and protected.

Asking for help is incredibly hard for her because she is someone who is always the one helping others. But right now, she cannot carry this alone anymore.
