About this fundraiser

Bernon has spent the last 36-years in prison grieving the loss of his children to a crime that he didn't commit. That is a long time for an innocent man to wait for justice. He deserves his freedom and after decades of injustice he needs your help.

In December 1989, Bernon Howery experienced unimaginable loss. A fire tore through the home he once shared with his partner and their four children. He arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. Police on the scene initially told him no one was inside, but after the fire was extinguished, firefighters discovered the bodies of his four young children—Ladonja (11), Prima (10), Joel (9), and Justina (5)—huddled in an upstairs closet. Only the youngest was still alive when found, but she passed away shortly after.

Bernon was arrested and charged with eight counts of murder and one count of arson. The trial that followed was a travesty of justice- and that's about all that can be said about this case at this time while our lawyers are challenging his final Habeas Corpus appeal.

At the time of the awful fire, Bernon served as an elected member of the Kankakee County Board. He had exposed financial corruption in a probation support program that targeted  parolees and teen mothers. His whistleblowing made him a political target. When tragedy struck, corrupt officials exploited the moment to destroy his life.

Currently we have retained the law office of Lyon & Kerr, an experienced wrongful conviction and post-conviction relief law firm, to file the Habeas Corpus appeal. This represents Bernon’s most realistic path to freedom after decades of injustice.

Your donations will help to forge the fight ahead to provide: Expert legal representation, Legal research & filings, Expert witness analysis, New evidence investigation, Court motion fees and more.
