My mom, Judy, has already fought breast cancer. Now, she’s facing an incredibly rare and aggressive cancer called chordoma in her cervical spine—and the fight ahead is going to be a long one.

After two major surgeries, Mom is home healing and preparing to begin weeks of proton radiation. Between medical expenses, travel to and from treatment, household bills, meals, and the everyday costs of navigating cancer treatment, she could really use some help.

So many of you have reached out over the last few weeks asking me, “What can we do to help your mom?” And truthfully, until now, I really didn’t know what to tell you.

We finally have a better idea of what the next several weeks are going to look like, so I created this GoFundMe for my mom, Judy, to give everyone who has asked a simple way to help.

Any funds raised will go directly toward medical expenses, travel to and from treatment, household bills, and the everyday costs that come with everything our family is facing right now.

Most of you know Mom has already fought breast cancer. Then, completely unexpectedly, we found out she also has an extremely rare chordoma in her cervical spine. Chordoma is a cancer so rare that only around 200 people are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

Her tumor destroyed much of one of the vertebrae in her neck, leaving her with a broken and unstable neck. She underwent two major surgeries to remove as much tumor as possible, decompress her spinal cord, and reconstruct and stabilize her neck.

She’s home now and healing, but recovery is still very much happening. She’s rebuilding strength, learning how to use muscles again, dealing with swallowing issues, and still cannot drive herself.

And now we’re gearing up for the next fight: proton radiation.

On September 3rd, she’ll have an MRI in Baltimore followed by her first mapping session at the Proton Center.

On September 9th, she’ll have a CT myelogram, where contrast will be injected into her spinal canal through a spinal tap so they can precisely map and protect her spinal cord. Then it’s back to the Proton Center that same day for her final mapping.

After that, things move VERY fast.

We currently expect treatment to begin around September 16th. The initial plan is 32–37 treatment days, Monday through Friday, with TWO proton treatments every day, about six hours apart.

Chordoma is notoriously difficult to treat and requires an incredibly high radiation dose. Because that dose is far too much for her spinal cord and surrounding structures to safely receive at once, her daily treatment has to be divided into two sessions.

So for roughly six weeks, our lives are basically going to revolve around getting Mom to treatment, waiting six hours, doing treatment #2, getting her home…and waking up to do it all again.

There are going to be a lot of expenses along the way—medical costs, gas, parking, meals, groceries, household bills, and all the other unexpected expenses that come with being in the middle of a major cancer fight.

The amount of driving alone is going to be enormous. Between two treatments a day, five days a week, we’ll be making that trip over and over again. And after a full day of treatment, figuring out dinner or keeping up with everyday expenses is the last thing anyone wants to worry about.
