Nelson is 35 years old. He likes watching baseball. He dances bachata. And he recently became the father of the little girl in the picture – part Dominican, like Nelson, and part Peruvian, like her mother Katherine. They live with Nelson’s stepson, age 8, who is older and wiser and whom Nelson cares for with extra attention, because the boy has epilepsy and needs a parent’s hand. 

The family has spent years in Buffalo. Nelson has learned to drive in the snow – he used to be a bus driver in the tropics – and he loves his job driving around to deliver items for an online app service. His work gives him time to be home with his kids.

Years ago, Nelson and Katherine became close to each other when they both found themselves traveling on the difficult path to the US. Nelson worried about Katherine and her boy. He took care of them every day. Bit by bit, Nelson and Katherine fell in love. Katherine remembers, “He was like the help that God sent me.” 

Nelson and Katherine presented themselves to US officials and requested asylum legally. Then they began their life in Buffalo. They have a quiet, hardworking routine. It was shattered one day this March when Border Patrol surrounded Nelson at a gas station as he was on his way to work. They knew that he had an upcoming court date for his asylum, that he was collaborating with government officials and his lawyer, and that he was following the rules. But that didn’t matter. They threw him in detention anyway, and he has been there since. 

Nelson and his family have strong hope that he can fight his case and win the right to stay with his children and Katherine in this country. But he now faces a complicated obstacle course. The next obstacle is a $1030 federal fee. He has to pay it this week. 

When Nelson called from detention today to talk about this fundraiser, he wanted to make sure that people knew about his kids. That he needs to be with them.

Nelson tiene 35 años. Le gusta el béisbol. Baila bachata. Y ahora es padre de la niña que aparece en la foto: una niña en parte dominicana, como Nelson, y en parte peruana, como su madre, Katherine. Viven con el hijastro de Nelson, de 8 años, quien es el mayor y el más sensato, y a quien Nelson cuida con especial atención, ya que el niño padece epilepsia y necesita la mano protectora de un padre.

La familia lleva años viviendo en Buffalo. Nelson ha aprendido a conducir sobre la nieve. (Antes de eso, era conductor de autobús en un clima tropical.) Y le encanta su trabajo, que consiste en realizar entregas a domicilio para un servicio por internet. Su trabajo le permite tener tiempo para estar en casa con sus hijos.

Hace años, Nelson y Katherine se hicieron amigos mientras ambos recorrían el arduo camino hacia los Estados Unidos. Nelson se preocupaba por Katherine y por el niño; cuidaba de ellos día tras día. Poco a poco, Nelson y Katherine se enamoraron. Katherine dice: «Era como el apoyo que Dios me mandó».

Nelson y Katherine se presentaron ante las autoridades estadounidenses y solicitaron asilo por la vía legal. Y comenzaron su vida en Buffalo. Llevan una rutina tranquila y trabajadora. Esa rutina se vió abruptamente interrumpida un día de este mes de marzo, cuando la Patrulla Fronteriza rodeó a Nelson en una gasolinera mientras él se dirigía a su trabajo. Los de la Patrulla sabían que Nelson tenía una audiencia judicial pendiente para su caso de asilo. Sabían que estaba colaborando con las autoridades gubernamentales y con su abogado. Sabían que estaba cumpliendo las normas. Pero eso no importó. Lo enviaron a un centro de detención y allí permanece desde entonces.

Nelson y su familia tienen la firme esperanza de que él pueda pelear su caso y ganar el derecho a permanecer con sus hijos y con Katherine en este país. Sin embargo, ahora se enfrenta a una complicada carrera de obstáculos. El obstáculo de hoy es una tarifa federal de $1030. Debe pagarla esta misma semana.

Cuando Nelson llamó hoy desde el centro de detención para hablar sobre esta campaña de recaudación de fondos, quiso asegurarse de que la gente supiera de sus hijos; de que él necesita estar con ellos.
