My husband and I live in Kodiak, Alaska, a small island situated in the Kodiak archipelago of the Aleutian chain. Kodiak is in a housing crisis due to a shortage of real estate, and being the location of the largest Coast Guard base in the world, housing for locals is not readily available. What is available has increased in cost to an unachievable rate. local pay rates do not support the average rent payment, and to purchase a home is impossible for most locals.
Last July, my husband, myself and our two cats moved into a home that is very modest and (barely) affordable. We definitely live paycheck to paycheck despite both being employed full time, and I have a second part time job to supplement. Due to my husband Having a total hip replacement surgery in August, and then unexpected car repairs, we fell behind in rent. Then winter came and being an island, we rely on heating oil for most homes for heat and hot water. To fill a 300 gallon tank every few months is around $1500. We cover all other household exppenses as well. This is the most expensive place to live in Alaska, and even if we wanted to move to a more affordable location, we are stuck taking an expensive ferry for two vehicles and a Uhaul .. it was $20,000 to move here, and another $15,000 to move into a home.
Right now, our landlord is asking us to move out by the 25th to avoid eviction. He has the paperwork ready to file, but we have no where to go. We have no alternative and it is still winter here.
I have applied for loans, I have asked family, and even asked my employers if there is any programs. After exhausting everything I can think of, I am left asking here to avoid us and our two very wonderful kitties from an impossible situation, funds to keep us in our home.
We do not have any savings to get a storage unit, rent a moving truck, or to pay move-in costs even if there was something available. The housing crisis is very real here. People do have vacant homes, but use them as very expensive vacation rentals.
$11,500 is due in past rents ($2900 per month) 3 months behind and late fees.
April, May, and June are left on our lease. Help with these rents or, to help us afford to get off island where it is more affordable to live Is what the balance is intended for.
we have until Friday to have the money, or start moving over the weekend to be out by the 25th. Please help.
