You have cancer! The three little words no one wants to hear.
Having to travel hundreds of miles away in order to get treatment, leave behind your children , pets, home etc… is not easy for anyone to have to endure.
This is Freya Dunbar's story.
A local girl here in Dawson Creek BC.
It’s called mantle cell lymphoma. Mantle cell lymphoma affects the B cells. It develops in the part of the lymph node called the mantle zone. The abnormal B lymphocytes start to collect in the lymph nodes or body organs. They can then form tumours and begin to cause problems within the lymphatic system or the organ where they are growing. Mantle cell lymphoma is not a curable lymphoma. My current treatment protocol is 6 months of chemo, and a stem cell transplant that will be done in Vancouver. I don’t have exact costs, but a month renting something in Vancouver is close to $10,00. We’ll have to be there for 2 months. That doesn’t include food or any other expenses that will be incurred while away, and because it’s not curable, they’ll be future testing that will also require travel. It’s really hard to put an exact number on all that.
