  • A Look at Last Week and a Look Toward the Future

    Dear friends,

Your generous support and countless prayers have brought hope and kindness to a difficult situation. During this tumultuous week, there have been tears of joy because you have cared. Thank you! May God bless and keep you.

The incredible difference you have made includes:
    *funds for a security deposit
*funds for the first month of rent
*gasoline to continue job searches, interviews, and appointments with community services.
*a phone that connects mother and son while they face being separated stay active (Thank you to the Knights of Columbus!!!)

Yesterday Selene and her son said goodbye to their home. They enter a season of separate, temporary housing arrangements. Selene has been welcomed into a coworkers home for a few days and is looking for a longer temporary place to stay near Winchester after that. She continues to search for job opportunities, apply, and interview at least 35 hours each week.

The fundraising goal is being increased for several reasons:
*to pay for a car repair that was needed this past week
*To pay for 4 new tires she needs put on her vehicle to allow her to continue her job search and once work is acquired, enable her to commute to and from work without any issues
*to continue to pay regular bills such as phone, car loan, car insurance, and storage unit among other significant bills that include loans while unemployment continues.

Due to the inability to acquire help with a semi long-term housing situation until the forever home is acquired the additional request for funds will enable her to acquire semi permanent housing so she won’t have to jump from place to place allowing her to better consistently seek employment without the uncertainty of where she’s bedding for the night

Many people have emailed or called to ask how else they can help. Here are a few ways:
*Do you have a job lead?
*Do you have a little side job or project for which you are willing to pay cash? Selene would be happy to do the work and is more than willing to do what is needed to earn income… any work would be most appreciated!
*Do you have a free place Selene can stay until she has a job and a month of pay stubs that landlords require?
*In preparation for the near future, do you know of rentals that will accept tenants with income, despite poor credit?
*Do you have a place to store her things so she doesn't need to pay for a storage unit? (And help to move the things?)

*Please share her story so we can continue to surround her with support.

You will all remain in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you again for your support during this time.

About this fundraiser

Help the Schwethelm Family stay together and acquire a safe place to call home!

Selena and her son Julyen are parishioners at Sacred Heart. Selena was laid off from her job in November 2025 and has been searching for work since then.

We know what happens during a time of unemployment: the bills pile up, payments are late, credit scores sink. Once a job is obtained, a person still has to earn several paychecks before there is enough money to rent a home. Poor credit will still limit a person's ability to be given a lease. Let's join together to help this family!

How will donations help?
*Gasoline to drive to job interviews, job searches, appointments with community service organizations, and will offset gas expenses of commuting to work once a job is acquired
*Funds to continue paying her car loan
*Money for her son's phone so that if they are separated by the system she can stay in touch with him
*Pay off debts so the credit scores can begin improving and the chance of being approved to rent a home will increase

In addition to monetary support, could you bring Julyen into your home until Selena can obtain a job and home?

On Friday February 27th the lease for their home will not be renewed and she will be homeless and plans to live out of her vehicle. Julyen will not be allowed to live that way and will enter the system. Selena would very much prefer to set Julian up with a family outside of the system who can keep him until she obtains a job and a safe home for the two of them.

Julyen is a quiet, helpful boy who is a student at Handley High School. He has high-functioning autism and an intellectual disability. He likes movies, book stores and the comfort of bedtime stories read at night. The school bus will bring him to and from school whether he lives in Winchester or Frederick County or another nearby county.

If you may be able to welcome Julyen into your home, please contact Valerie Roth (540-431-1900) who will provide Selena's contact information.
