This fundraiser is a cry for help for my dear friend of over 20 years, Shelia, who is in a dire situation as she faces losing her home through a series of tragic circumstances.
After nearly 27 years of service as a firefighter in Beaufort County, Shelia’s husband Eric dedicated his life to helping others on their worst days. He never hesitated, never asked for recognition—he simply showed up.
That legacy lives on through one of his children, who now serves as a Beaufort County firefighter.
While still on active duty, Eric suffered a stroke. He fought hard to recover and returned to full-time shift work, continuing to serve his community with courage and dedication. Two years later, he passed away from a heart attack.
Eric used what little retirement he had to pay off the mortgage, making sure his wife, Shelia, would always have a home.
On Mother’s Day 2025, Eric passed away.
But the heartbreak didn’t stop there.
In April 2024, Shelia lost her baby sister, Cherish—an EMT-Advanced in Beaufort County—to a sudden and unexpected passing. Then, just three days after Eric’s funeral, on July 3rd, Shelia lost her stepmother, whom she had been caring for.
In just over a year, Shelia has endured unimaginable loss—her husband of 32 years, her sister, and her stepmother—all while trying to hold herself and her family together.
Now, she is facing yet another battle.
Eric’s estate is in probate, and creditors—including the hospital—are making claims. The only assets left are their 30-year-old mobile home, the land it sits on, and Eric’s motorcycle. Without legal help, Shelia could be forced to sell everything just to satisfy these debts.
To protect her home, Shelia needs to hire an attorney—an expense that is simply out of reach while she struggles to make ends meet.
This fundraiser is to help Shelia fight for the one thing Eric worked so hard to leave her: a place to call home.
Shelia is not someone who asks for help. But right now, she is grieving, overwhelmed, and facing a fight she cannot take on alone.
If you feel led to give, any amount will go directly toward legal fees and help ease the burden she is carrying.
If you’re unable to give, sharing her story means more than you know.
Eric spent his life taking care of others. Now it’s our turn to take care of Shelia.
