A few weeks ago, a dear friend of mine was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Upon further screening, his doctor determined that the best course of action was to operate immediately, and he is recovering from this surgery now. My friend came to the US from Trinidad in the year 2000, and applied for US citizenship that year. In the aftermath of 9-11 the following year, his (and millions of others') immigration forms were thrown out and he was forced to restart the process several years later, now with an estimated wait time of 10-15 years. Around 15 years later, Trump was elected to office, and the waiting time increased from 10-15 to 20-25 years. Now, more than 23 years since his initial application, he is still without citizenship and therefore is unable to be covered by the affordable care act, making his cancer treatment a significant financial burden.
