Update: Mama B has successfully transitioned to being at home! She has left her medical rehab facility and is now trying to return to her “new normal”. This does include up to 60 medications daily! This has cost her approximately $250+ just for medications the first week she was home. Thanks to all of your thoughtful donations, we were able to help her cover someof her immediate medical needs. After she is able to get more settled, she would love to update you all soon. She is overwhelmed by all of the support and help, and is just so grateful for everyone's prayers, thoughts and good vibes. 🫶
……………………..
Mama B started on what was supposed to be an exciting and helpful journey. After 30 years of waiting, she was finally getting her first hip replaced. She seemed to get through the hip surgery okay but the recovery was a challenge. She developed a very large collection of fluid on it, and her incision, would not heal. At six week follow up, the surgeon discovered her femur was broken! We didn't even know! She was scheduled for immediate surgery the next day at St. Luke's in the Med Center Houston.
She got through the surgery okay (did need two blood transfusions) and was admitted into their ambulatory inpatient area and was supposed to go to inpatient rehab after 4 days. What followed was strange behaviors for her. Her blood pressure plummeted and she required more blood. Tremors and extreme fatigue began and then trouble finding words and speaking followed. Her kidneys were struggling too. She went for immediate CT and MRI and was transferred to the main St. Luke's hospital. That night she went into AFib (did not know she had this) and the next morning it was confirmed she had had several mini strokes. The AFib made the heart throw a blood clot that scattered tiny blood clots into 4 different areas of her brain.
As of today, she's been in the hospital for three weeks. She has had 7 total blood transfusions, IV antibiotics (which will continue for a few weeks), and dialysis. She will go to inpatient rehab at Encompass to continue hip, stroke recovery and the dialysis.
This means she has spent a lot on miscellaneous items while in hospital and this will continue as she will need special things for her recovery. Also, Jen her daughter will need to make multiple trips back and forth from AZ to TX. Any help given will help remove financial stress so that we (especially Mama B) can focus on her recovery and adapting to her new situation over the next year of recovery and learning to live life as a stroke survivor.
