Since I was a child watching Jacqeus Cousteau on the Calypso, I have held a fascination with the ocean. I read books, watched documentaries, and took classes to support my interest. However, at some point I gave up on this goal. In my junior year of high school, chemistry was difficult for me as was Algebra II Trigonometry. Doubt crept in and it made me think I didn't have what it'd take to be out studying the open ocean. I realize now I was wrong.

I've been a teacher for 24 years, and I have watched countless students cross the graduation stage. I have encouraged, guided, and supported them toward their dreams. It's time for me to realize mine.

I have been accepted to be a part of the marine conservation project in Croatia through International Volunteer HQ. I see and feel an urgent need to return to my goal of working with the ocean and its inhabitants to minimize the human impact and to maintain a healthy balance in this one little area of the more than 70% water that Earth holds. I don't see this one experience as a singular endeavor. Rather, I view it as the start of an ongoing endeavor for the next phase of my life. This is my commitment to future conservation efforts as well as this one.

The money raised here will be used to pay for the plane tickets for my first overseas marine conservation volunteer involvement in June 2026. The marine life of Split, Croatia and the coast lines nearby will benefit directly from the efforts the program volunteers including me provide through this program.
