A First Birthday Miracle: Celebrating Zayleigh Mae
Our little miracle is turning one!
One year ago, our family witnessed a historic, medical miracle. Zayleigh Mae came into this world at just 21 weeks and 4 days gestation. At this stage, a baby's vital organs are barely formed, and the chances of surviving anywhere in the entire world are close to zero. Most hospitals worldwide cannot offer intensive care so early. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
But Zayleigh Mae was born at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital, a national treasure and home to world-renowned pioneers in micro-preemie care. Alongside the history-making boy born there at exactly 21 weeks, Zayleigh Mae is proudly one of the two youngest babies to ever survive at this incredible hospital. In fact, she has officially tied the record for the youngest female baby to ever survive in the entire world! [1, 2, 5, 6]
Against all impossible medical odds, Zayleigh Mae chose to fight. Thanks to her fierce spirit, her expert medical team, and her incredible will to live, she is here today. She now weighs a thriving 18 pounds and just reached her most breathtaking milestone yet: she was officially taken off oxygen! [7]
