About this fundraiser

My mom, Paula, would be the last person to ever ask for help. If you know her, you know she is always the first to give it—she will pour from an empty cup to support friends, family, and even strangers. She has a giant heart, an incredible work ethic, and has continued pushing through a very demanding career despite prolonged and unmanaged autoimmune issues she battles every day. In this tough economy, that has often meant juggling two to four jobs just to make ends meet. She is also the primary caregiver for my brother, who has faced serious health issues since infancy.

Mom was admitted to the hospital on November 28th and is still hospitalized. She became extremely ill with GI motility issues and other serious health complications. Her immune system is struggling to heal, and right now she cannot digest food or liquids. She cannot return home until her digestive system begins functioning well enough for her to receive proper nourishment. This may require additional surgery. We are praying she will be home soon and able to tolerate normal food again, but the road ahead is uncertain. It has been a slow, complicated process filled with tests, treatments, and still many unanswered questions.

As of today, Mom still is unable to eat or drink and will have a feeding tube placed. Hopefully it will be temporary until she can have a major surgery to remove her esophagus and stretch her stomach to hopefully replace the feeding tube and return her to a somewhat normal life. During this time she will be travelling to and from Albany (2+ hours away). She has worked as a Correctional Officer which she has duly served for over 20 years as a single mother raising two children, both with health concerns of their own. She has always been self supportive and needs our help now as she will be out of work for a significant time, perhaps permanently.

Our family is humbly asking for support as she begins this long road to recovery. Any contribution (even $1) will help lighten the heavy burdens she has carried for so long and allow her to focus on healing. Your support will help with medical expenses and ensure that Mom can keep her home and meet basic needs while she is unable to work and receive any income. If you are able to give, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Most of all, we are deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and continued support. Together, let’s help lighten the load for my mom, Paula, so she can focus on getting well. May the Peace of God be with you and your family.
