On February 7th our dog, Pedro, was hospitalized at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Redmond, WA. He was diagnosed with salmon poisoning, a potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by the consumption of infected raw fish in the PNW. After the flooding in December, our street and nearby creeks suddenly saw hundreds of salmon that are now decaying around our neighborhood.
Pedro was able to receive treatment for salmon poisoning, but he unfortunately developed immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP) as a process of the disease and was hospitalized in critical care for 4 days. His platelet count was undetectable for several days. He needed many blood transfusions and high dose steroids. Thankfully, he survived and was able to be discharged home on the evening of Feb 10th. He's doing much better now, but is definitely not out of the woods. He'll need long term medications and vet follow up and he is at high risk of relapse of the IMTP. Right now we are just so happy we chose to keep going and do everything to save our dog.
We very fortunately have pet insurance for Pedro, but as one can imagine, the vet bills we accrued have far surpassed our max coverage. We’ve been truly overwhelmed by the incredible support from our community. While we initially hesitated to ask for financial help, we’ve realized how much Pedro means to all of you, too. He isn’t just our dog; he’s a deeply loved member of this community, and your eagerness to help has shown us we don't have to do this alone. If you would like to help financially support us as we pay for Pedro's emergency bills and ongoing care, we would gratefully accept your donation.
