Hello, my name is Kelly Dickerson and I am establishing this fundraiser to assist my sister and lifetime friend, Tammy Raley who lives in Foley, Alabama.
Here is her Story: Tammy had been having severe abdominal pain for several months. On Thanksgiving weekend, she went to the ER in Fairhope, Alabama with severe abdominal pain. It was ultimately decided that surgery was necessary to remove a blockage in her small intestine. She was scheduled for surgery on
December 26 th , the day after Christmas, and sent home on a complete liquid diet.
Almost a month later, the surgery was performed successfully, however, upon being discharged she began to develop strange complications. She was taken back to the ER by ambulance where she was admitted due to pain, mental confusion, and an inability to walk or stand. An MRI identified significant brain damage, and the neurologist diagnosed it as Wernicke encephalopathy which can be life threatening if not treated immediately. Since being readmitted, she has not been able to care for herself. At times, she does not know where she is and cannot recognize close family members. She relies fully on the care of her daughter.
Wernicke encephalopathy is caused by the lack of thiamine (vitamin B1). This syndrome essentially creates dementia-like symptoms and can worsen over time, leading to permanent brain damage if left untreated. We have not been given any expectations regarding her recovery. Her neurologist has stated that it will be a “long hard road”.
For the last several years, Tammy has been raising her two grandchildren. She is the sole breadwinner of her family. We are asking you to do whatever you can to help this precious family get through this catastrophic situation.
Thank you for caring.

Update: Please keep in touch with Tammy
Tammy was released from the hospital and is now under Home Health Care. She is recovering physically, but her short term memory is still severely affected.
She is capable of carrying on a lucid conversation, but she may not remember it later. And at times, she forgets that she had surgery and doesn't know what happened to her.
To all her friends, please keep in touch with her. Call her, text her, send her games and riddles. She will definitely remember you, just not what she had for breakfast. we are hoping that the more she interacts with friends, family, etc., the more she will regain her full faculties.
It is going to be a long battle. We are currently taking things day by day, hoping for a swift recovery, but it looks like she will have to go on long term disability until she gets well.
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to her cause! The family appreciates it so much. Read More
