Father’s Day morning at 6 AM I got a phone call from a neighbor stating that they had found a dog in a crate in the woods. I drove down and my heart sank instantly. The dog I saw in front of me was so lethargic I really didn’t think he stood a chance. We have no idea how long he was in that crate. But we do know the abuse he has endured in his life is unimaginable. He was matted head to toe, matts that take years, he was covered in his own urine and feces, and so weak he wasn’t even able to lift his head to drink water. We ended up making the appropriate reports. We took him home. We gave him a bath. And began the de-matting process. 7 hours later with LOTS of breaks, we found out he was a boy. At this time he’s unable to stand unassisted. He is able to finally sit up on his own and drink water. 
 

vet visit revealed: 

Trooper came in today as a newly presented intact male. He is currently in an extremely emaciated (very thin and malnourished) condition, and we also noted some fecal matting around his rectum. Because we don't have any history on him and given how poor his body condition is, we want to make sure we get a thorough picture of his overall health before moving forward.

To do that, we are recommending a diagnostic workup that would include in-house blood work to check how his organs are functioning, a complete blood count (a test that looks at his red and white blood cells to check for infection and anemia, which is a low red blood cell count), a fecal parasite exam to check for intestinal worms or other parasites, and a heartworm and tick-borne disease panel. The estimated cost for the exam and these diagnostics comes to $436 before any treatment. He also will be kept over night due to anemia and low calcium for additional cost. Once he is healed he will still need to be neutered, shots, microchipped, anything we make extra for him will go to his future preventive care! Anything at all helps! Please help give Trooper a second chance! Drop him a little prayer too.

update: 
Trooper made it home!!! Almost a week later he’s finally able to walk. He’s wobbly but thank you Jesus he’s walking again. In a dog this emaciated its vital they get up, get moving, get exercise to help rebuild musce all while slow and steady. We tried increasing his food yesterday. He had a horrible day after that. So I’m honestly surprised he’s up and moving today. His digestive issues will come and go as we try find the right time and amount to increase his foods. he goes in for a blooddraw this week to see if his numbers look any better and medically we will know more then. otherwise he seems happy and comfortable. Thank you to our 5 donors. This paid for his emergency care, his next blood draw and probably his shots! he will still need neutering and a dental cleaning. Any left over funds will be left with his Vets office to donate to someone else in need once all of troopers care is completed. Thank you all so much!!! 
 

UPDATE 7/7/26 

Trooper extensive senior panel came back, all things considered his panels looked well. Calcium is still low but rising, anemia is still there but so much better. Hes been urinating on himself almost like he doesn’t even know it’s happening for the past few days. His urine came back that I had bacteria in it. So we started him on a double antibiotic to treat UTI, bladder infection/kidney infections  . He goes back the 22nd for another blood draw to make sure his numbers have continued to rise and a urine sample to make sure antibiotics worked! So far weve raise 1,066, first bill $413, his second $275, and $35 for his antibiotics. That leaves $334 for his next bloodwork draw, still needs shots, dental cleaning and a neuter. UPDATE 7/15

Trooper woke up with a new medical concern today. We called the vet first thing but due to their day couldn’t see him until this afternoon & we’d be a work in. So, we spent the morning obsessing over him. We spent the afternoon at the vet. It was determined that Trooper prostate is significantly enlarged. Over night. This is normal for older dogs especially males not neutered. 
On top of that, Trooper is still having bathroom issues. We had a urine sample done today and it was clear this time so antibiotics worked. So not uti, kidney or bladder infection.So next concern is Cushing disease. Being, we know nothing of his past. Cushing’s disease (hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs occurs when the body overproduces the stress hormone cortisol, usually due to a pituitary or adrenal gland tumor. We’ve decided Trooper will have a Cushing test done in a few days. This matters for his overall health and for his potential adopter. I was told per vet that Cushing treatment monthly on average is $500-$600 a month. Treatment typically requires lifelong oral medication, like Trilostane, to regulate hormone levels. We’re not going to jump to conclusions. We’re just trying to get to the bottom of some of troopers concerns. Any animal in our care, quality life comes first.

Trooper deserves so much more than life has given him.

His first bill a donation was made so instead of $453, it ended up being $413, his senior extensive panel was $275, $35 antibiotics and today visit was $225. He goes Tuesday for the Cushions testing. It’s a $400-$500 dollar test per vet tech. Please help if you can. At this point we still haven’t accomplished basic care vaccinations, neuter or dental cleaning.
