This is Melody, my cousin, who currently is waiting for her second brain surgery to take place in a few weeks. She has suffered with debilitating seizures for over ten years now and the doctors have tried many different medicines and other types of treatments, but nothing has worked to stop them from happening. Due to the risk of having a seizure while driving(she has before), her driving privileges were taken away, leaving her unable to go anywhere. She has always worked, up until a year ago once the seizures started occurring more frequently. Now losing her ability to work or drive has left her without much hope and the financial burden of medical expenses, the money to travel to and from Vanderbilt, all while still trying to pay for everyday living expenses for her and her daughter has become too much.
Since no medications were effective for these seizures, the only option left was brain surgery. The RNS system, a tiny device that monitor brain activity, has the ability to detect and disrupt the abnormal brain waves that cause a seizure, stopping it before it can occur. This form of therapy also has been known to decrease the number of seizures a person has over time., which is the ultimate goal for anyone experiencing these disabling seizures. The neurologists did the first surgery and she now has to get the second surgery in a few weeks Which is when the device will be implanted
After her surgery, she will be required to do a monthly visit for an entire year- so gas and other travel expenses are going to add up and we want Melody to have this surgery and not have to worry about how she is going to manage the financial part of this while recovering and trying to get her life back to normal. So if you can please help by sharing this with others or if you are able to help financially - we would be so grateful for the support. Thank you so much for your help and your time.
