13 years! For 13 years, Liam has blessed us with his sweet, gentle, and loving spirit and has defied all odds stacked against him since learning as an infant about his extremely rare, degenerative neurological condition- Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia . One of the many impacts this life-limiting condition has is it severely impairs Liam’s ability to support himself for all daily living activities, and when having to describe him for first time interactions with others, he’s as if he’s an infant in a 13 year old body….as one who relies 100 percent on caregivers for every need. We are beyond thankful that Liam is here with us and blessing us with his sweet smile, infectious giggles, and inspirational perseverance, and with that comes increased wear and tear on the bodies of those who care for him daily- including his family and in-home nurses. We are blessed to have access to a Medicaid Waiver program that helps cover some cost for home and vehicle modifications needed to safely care for a disabled individual at home, but unfortunately the funding we’ve used to make his home handicap accessible doesn’t renew for Liam until 2028. Liam is getting bigger in weight and height, which is hard for safe transfers from beds, chairs, showers, and more when we lift him by hand. A ceiling lift/track system for his home would provide the support needed for him and his caregivers to move around freely in the home without risk of injury.
