THE CRISIS: Three years ago I had a sudden blood clot behind my right collarbone. They caught a rare condition in time called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Basically the space between my first rib and my collarbone was compressing the subclavian vein, and an urgent rib removal surgery from the base of my neck was needed. I did it! A rehab process ensued for several months and I was happy to be able put the trauma from that chapter behind me.
THE BIGGER CRISIS! Fast forward to now, and it’s happening again, but on the other side of my body. Thankfully this time, my lovely mother planned to move in temporarily and help me out with post-op mobility. We were set… until 48hrs before the big day, when mom went into her own emergency surgery, which landed her in the hospital for 6 days with a bad infection. She beat it! And thanks to some guardian angel friends of mine, who pivoted faster than lighting to take over as temporary caregivers, I was also able to get the surgery I needed. Before long, mom and I were texting one another post-op from our respective hospital beds. It was a tough time to not be able to be present for the other one, but we hung in.
THE NOW: Now my rehab process begins again, and I’m here for it, but we are contending with some hospital bills, and I’m unable to return to my work yet. My therapist is forcing me to be vulnerable and practice asking for help, so here goes… If you’re at all able or inclined to contribute any amount during this recovery time, we’d be so grateful. We do not take lightly or for granted at all the rare gift of community and care during this time. Thank you all for being the light right now.
Love, S&S
