Help Baby Rafael Fight His Biggest Battle Yet 

At just hours old, baby Rafael’s life changed in ways his family never could have imagined. What started as a beautiful birth quickly turned into a fight for his little life—and today, his family is facing a future filled with uncertainty, hope, and more medical challenges than any parent should have to face. 

Rafael was born on September 9th at 6:25 PM. Just hours later, he began struggling to breathe and his oxygen levels dropped dangerously low. He was rushed to the NICU, where he spent several days receiving oxygen and fighting to improve.

 When doctors noticed possible seizures and problems with feeding, Rafael was transferred by air ambulance to Children's Hospital for specialized care.

 After extensive testing, Rafael was diagnosed with bilateral polymicrogyria (PMG), a rare brain abnormality, as well as a rare CHD3 genetic mutation. Both conditions can affect development, movement, speech, eating and seizures, and right now, doctors cannot tell his family exactly what his future will look like.

 Rafael also failed his swallow study and silently aspirated, meaning he will need surgery for a G-tube so he can safely receive nutrition. He is expected to remain in the NICU for several more weeks. 

Arturo and Emma never imagined they would have to ask for help. Right now, their only priority is their baby boy and getting him everything he needs.
