Gonzalo loves soccer. He cheers for Real Madrid. He works construction. He dances.

And he's behind bars in ICE detention.

Gonzalo came to this country to be safe and free. Where he's from, he's often been thought of as different. He has spent most of his life, so far, in a small Quechua-speaking village in central Bolivia. As a child, he preferred playing with dolls. When he got to high school, he met another young man who felt the way that he did, and they fell in love. One evening they thought that they could visit a local festival together, quietly. They were wrong.

A group of men attacked them viciously. “Now we’re really going to make you a man,” they said. Gonzalo’s brother remembers that when Gonzalo came home, bloody and beaten, Gonzalo hid in his room. After a day, his mother insisted on taking him to the hospital. If she hadn’t, the brother now thinks, Gonzalo would have died.

The beating was only the start. People began coming by the house to make threats over and over again. Gonzalo and his boyfriend tried fleeing to another part of the country. People warned them that they weren’t safe there, either– “it’s too close.” So they thought of the boyfriend’s uncle in the United States. And they made their way here.

Gonzalo was working peacefully in construction in the US when he got swept up in an ICE raid. It didn’t matter that he had a reason for asylum. He was thrown behind bars. And that’s where he is now.

Gonzalo has been in detention for four months. To get out, he needs a lawyer. And a bond. And evidence from Bolivia. So it’s time to give him a hand. Any funds raised will go directly to cover his legal and similar expenses. And if there are funds that can’t be used for that purpose, we will give them to an organization that provides direct assistance to immigrants with legal challenges.

Y ahora se encuentra tras las rejas, detenido por ICE.

Gonzalo llegó a este país en busca de seguridad y libertad. Viene de un lugar donde a menudo se le ha considerado diferente. Hasta ahora, ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida en un pequeño pueblo de habla quechua en el centro de Bolivia. Ya de niño, prefería jugar con muñecas. Al llegar a la escuela secundaria, conoció a otro joven que se sentía igual que él, y los dos se enamoraron. Una tarde, pensaron que podrían asistir juntos a una fiesta local, discretamente. Se equivocaron.

Un grupo de hombres los atacó con brutalidad. «Ahora sí que te vamos a volver hombre», le dijeron. El hermano de Gonzalo recuerda que, cuando Gonzalo regresó a casa —ensangrentado y golpeado—, se encerró en su habitación. Un día después, su madre insistió en llevarlo al hospital. Si no lo hubiera hecho —piensa ahora su hermano—, Gonzalo habría muerto.

La paliza fue solo el comienzo. La gente empezó a rondar la casa para lanzar amenazas una y otra vez. Gonzalo y su novio intentaron huir a otra parte del país. Pero les advirtieron que tampoco estarían seguros allí: «está demasiado cerca». Fue entonces cuando pensaron en el tío del novio, que vivía en los Estados Unidos. Y emprendieron el viaje hacia aquí.

Gonzalo trabajaba pacíficamente en la construcción en los EE. UU. cuando fue detenido durante una redada de ICE. No importó que tuviera motivos válidos para solicitar asilo. Fue arrojado tras las rejas. Y ahí es donde se encuentra ahora.

Gonzalo ya pasó cuatro meses en detención. Para salir, necesita un abogado. Y una fianza. Y pruebas documentales desde Bolivia. Por eso, es hora de echarle una mano. Todos los fondos recaudados se destinarán directamente a cubrir sus gastos legales y otros gastos relacionados. Y si quedaran fondos que no pudieran utilizarse para ese fin, los donaremos a una organización que brinda asistencia directa a inmigrantes que enfrentan desafíos legales.
