Hello Friends and Family,
My name is Tacey. In July 2025 , my son Gavin, age 27, had a seizure and was diagnosed with a glioma brain tumor. He had surgery on August 5 to resect as much of the tumor as possible. The surgeon expected Gavin to have a 5 to 7 day stay in the hospital with recovery of fatigue for 12 weeks. But complications began the moment he was taken from the OR to recovery. Pneumonia and left side hemiplegia/ paralysis from his cheek to his toes caused a 20 day stay in ICU. Being intubated for 2 days post surgery, led to have to be retaught how to use his swallow reflexes. He was put on a nasal feeding tube and then a PEG feeding tube was placed in his abdomen.
Gavin spent 4 weeks at inpatient rehabilitation for daily occupational, physical and speech therapy. He relearned how to eat, walk with assistance, and use his arm from the elbow down. He battled side effects like vertigo, dizziness, nausea and constant migraines.
Gavin's visual field is currently missing in the left side of both eyes causing temporary functional blindness.
Gavin was released from the hospital needing a wheelchair, hemi walker, and special equipment to have a shower. His food and drinks are altered to allow for safe swallowing until his body is fully healed and to prevent aspiration pneumonia.
The biopsy of the tumor came back after several weeks to show a level 3 astrocytoma with IDH mutation. Gavin will undergo 33 daily rounds of targeted radiation. This will be followed by a round of chemo pills for 5 days per month for 12 months
His 12 week recovery has now been predicted to be 6 to 12 months. We are unsure at what point he will be able to return to his part time retail job.
The unexpected and very quick timeline of this diagnosis did not allow Gavin to prepare financially for time off work and the resulting medical bills.
Gavin will soon begin receiving bills from surgery, hospitalization, rehabilitation therapies, cancer treatments and medications. Countless items have been and will continue to be ordered to meet Gavin's medical and adaptive needs since being released from the hospital. There are also the expenses for transportation to and from appointments, treatments and therapies.
His part time job does not offer full benefits but did allow him unpaid medical leave.
If you find it in your heart to help Gavin pay for this very unexpected medical diagnosis, he would truly appreciate any help. Our friends and family have been a blessing of support through this process and we appreciate any donation you are able to make toward his medical care.
Thank you very much,
Tacey and Gavin
